8 key aspects of an online store (for the inquisitive)

We realise that many businessmen are not familiar with technologies and internet marketing (and this is not surprising!). Especially for them we have prepared a list of 8 aspects that one needs to pay attention to when creating a professional online store. Remember that a badly prepared online store will not provide you with revenues, on the contrary - it will only be an unnecessary cost.

1. Selection of the appropriate store system

After analysing the client's needs, we deal with choosing the right store system, which in the long run will work best for him. We have at our disposal, among others, the WooCommerce store system, PrestaShop, Magento and Shopify. The first two (WooCommerce, PrestaShop) are ideal for less extensive online shops. Their characteristic feature is the low cost of creation and expansion of an online store. However appropriate safeguards (provided by us) ensure stable operation. The third position (Magento) is a system for really large online shops. The cost of creation and development is greater than in the case of previous and requires advanced programming knowledge. In turn this system gives us the greatest opportunities. Its special feature is, among others, the possibility of running several shops in one administrative panel.

2. First impression (trust)

Do you think that an attractive offer will ensure you many orders? Not always. One of the most important aspects of online sales is trust. If a new customer receives your store as unreliable, the chances of an order fall to zero. For this reason, most budget online shops are closed before the actual "opening". Statistically, the first 5 seconds are the most important. After this time, it is much more difficult to change someone's assessment - even unfair. If your store looks professional, the chances of conversions increase significantly (in section 3 we describe what conversions are).

3. Orders and inquiries about the offer in online shops (conversions)

Each order, phone contact, request for an offer, filling out the contact form or adding a product to your favorites in the browser is a conversion, the action the customer is expected to do in advance. The task of the creator of the online store is to prepare a project that maximises the number of conversions. Particular attention should be paid to the aesthetics of product presentation, the intuitive way of adding them to the basket and the length of the ordering path. In our case, the following form is an example of increasing the number of conversions:

Do you have questions about the online store? Leave us your phone number. We will call you back.

4. A secure, recognisable and convenient payment system

Have you ever wondered what payment system to choose for your online store? When making this decision, pay attention to its recognition among target customers, functionality (e.g. support for VISA and MasterCard, Google Pay, Apple Pay) as well as initial and fixed costs. We offer integrations with many proven payment systems. One of the most universal is PayPal - it is recognised by customers from around the world. Stripe works best in the United Kingdom. DIBS, Klarna and Vipps are recommended for the Norwegian market. In turn, sales in Germany will be facilitated by Stripe, 2Checkout, and PayFast. If we haven't listed the payment system you are following, let us know! We will check the possibility of its integration with your online store.

5. Responsive version

Did you know that in the last year the majority (82%) of online shopping was done from mobile devices? That is why the online store adapted to the latest smartphones and tablets is currently the standard. The creator of your online store should ensure not only the correct display of the project in the mobile (responsive) version, but also the convenience of its use (trends of intuitive use of UX and UI). A polished responsive version can significantly increase the number of sales - especially if you don't have a base of regular customers yet.

6. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

First of all, you need to realise how an Internet search engine works. In a nutshell - indexing robots collect content from websites and save them in a database. Then the collected information is analysed according to an algorithm created by Google specialists. At present, the largest impact on items has, among others, the amount of unique content and the frequency of their update in the online store (the more often the better). A very important element of SEO is placing selected phrases (e.g. product names) in the headings of the online store. We have at our disposal: h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6. For example, the phrase that interests us is online shops, therefore in the h2 heading we place the text:

"online shops"

Remember that local positioning (e.g. London online shops) is much simpler due to less competition. The same principle applies to the popularity of your product range - niche products and categories will appear in leading positions much faster. In the case of popular products, the appearance in TOP 10 in England is difficult and time consuming, but possible. The second important element to look out for are links to your site. They can come from other websites or from your online store (e.g. from the Blog section). An example is the following redirect to the website creation offer (preferably if the linked pages are thematically related):

7. Gain customers in the online store

Imagine that you plan to open a stationary store in your city. Consider if you would choose a busy center or empty outskirts for its localisation? The equivalent of a stationary store's location is an online store’s advertisement. There are many ways of promotion (paid and free). At your disposal you have: natural search engine results (SEO and positioning), paid search engine links (Google Ads - formerly AdWords), banner ads on other websites (Google Ads), ads on YouTube (Google Ads), entries to the store by recommendation (word of mouth, your clients' social media, business cards), entry to the store from social media (your company's profiles) and many more. Contact us and tell us more about your target group. We are happy to provide you with several solutions that we think will work in your case.

8. Maintenance and security of the online store

Many programmers are not aware of the importance of the server on which the online store is located. Depending on the store system, number of users and online store functions, we pay attention to component effectivity and security. However, to understand this aspect well, you need specialist knowledge of SysOps and DevOps, which you do not need to have. Universal aspects that are worth paying attention to are: the amount of available RAM, optional resource scalability, the amount of available disk space, the frequency of creating an independent backup of files and a database (preferably if such a backup is performed daily), the cost of restoring a backup of files and database data (preferably if it is 0 GBP).
